And the Champion School of ISG Track and Field 08/09 is.......... SBM!
They were declared the Champion School after Akid Chong won the 4th event of the day, Men Javelin. This gives the SBM team a commanding lead of 145 points, mathematically impossible for their nearest challenger SCL/SHS team to beat.
The first two events of the day saw the crowning of NYP Fastest Men and Women. In the Men 100m, Abdul Rahman of SIT retained his title as "NYP Fastest Men" when he beat second place, Si Hao by more than half a second. In the Women's category, Jia Rui of SBM recovered from a disappointing 200m ending to win the 100m race. This time it was another "dramatic finish" that saw Jia Rui edging out her rival, SEG's Jasmine Guo for the Gold.
In the Javelin area, it was once again the "Wan Lay Chi" show as she grabbed her third gold and at the same time smashing the third school record. SHS's Jasmine Teo, defending champion of all three throws event could only settle for three silvers this year. In the Men Javelin, Freshmen Jobin Jose of SEG tried to put on a fight but it was Akid Chong who won it all, breaking his PB, winning his second Gold and retaining the Challenge Trophy for SBM.
In the Triple Jump pit, we saw ACS(I) alumni Abu Hanifah (SHS) and Foo Yong Kun (SBM) battling each other but it was the triple/long jump specialist Abu Hanifah who triumph after 6 jumps. Basil Chai of SBM was third.
Shifting to the long distance battle, we heard from record holder and defending champion Marcus Ong that he will not compete in the 1500m race. Thus leaving the race wide open for the likes of Nazri, Jerome and Philip to battle for gold. The trio started the race well but with 2 laps to go, race leader Nazri eventually succumbed to pressure and made a mistake. Philip "Kenyan" R eventually won and lead the SBM to a top 4 finish. In the Women's race, SIT's Hui Qin dominated and won the race but missed the school record by 2 seconds.
Back to the Jump pit, Lim Woon Ching (SCL) who finished 6th in 100m, won the women's category with her final jump of the day. Defending champion, Pei Gin of SHS could only finish third this time. In the Men Long Jump, Abu Hanifah of SHS won his second gold of the day by finishing 3cm ahead of silver medalist, Loh Chao Hong of SEG. Foo Yong Kun completed the long jump podium with a bronze, thus winning a medal of each colour (High Jump gold, Triple Jump silver and Long Jump bronze).
The postponed race of Women 400m final was once again the battle between SBM's Jia Rui and SEG's Jasmine Guo. The duo fight right from the start pushing each other to the limit but ultimately it was down to yet another "dramatic finish". This time is was SEG's Jasmine who closed down and finally overtook SBM's Jia Rui at the finish, winning gold in her last ISG individual race. Ironically, it was the 100m/200m Jasmine who won the 400m race and 200m/400m Jia Rui who won the 100m race..
In the first ever Inter-CCA 4x100m relay, it was the NYP Ultimate who grabbed Gold in this event while NYP Watersports and SEG Club win silver and bronze respectively.
The Alumni returned for the Men's relay. However, the baton exchange failure between the 2nd and 3rd leg allow the SBM team to open up the lead to up to 20m. National athlete, Muthukumaran tried to close down on freshman Haider but only managed to close down 15m. SBM eventually won the relay but is still short of the record by 0.7s.
The Women 4x100 relay is a one sided affair as the SBM team consisting of Jia Rui, Genevieve, Chor Hoon and Lay Chi led from start to finish to win gold. After this win, freshman Lay Chi had now won 4 Golds, 3 Records within 2 Days in 1 Meet.
The final event of the meet, the Men 4x400m relay is once again a battle between the Alumni and SBM. This time round it was the Alumni who triumphed, leading from the 1st leg to the anchor leg. Though losing to the Alumni, the SBM team unknowingly pushed themselves beyond the limit and therefore breaking the School's 4x400m record for the 2nd time in 2 years.
At the end of the meet, SBM won with a staggering 402 points while SCL/SHS were the "Best of the Rest" beating SEG with 159 to 142 points. SDN/SIDM/SIT is fourth.

At the end of day 1, SBM led the School Challenge Trophy with a crushing 180 points while their nearest competitor, SCL/SHS could only managed 69 points.. This incredible feat was possible because of the support of the Sport and Wellness contingent who contributed 130 points..
ISG Track and Field 08/09 started off with the fastest competition of the year, the Men 100m.. The first heat saw Second year Cheng Huan of SCL qualify alongside Final year Nigel D'Cotta and First year Haider.. The next heat also known as the "Group of Death" featured defending champion, Rahman as well as few NYP sprinters in it.. In the end, Rahman won the heat easily followed by Si Hao while Daryl of SBM qualified as the second of the two "Best Time" slot.. The final heat saw freshman Kenneth winning while Mark of SEG grab the second automatic qualifying place..

In the Women 100m heats, there were no surprises when Jia Rui and Jasmine won their respective heats easily.. Only one-tenth of a second separates both of them so who will win the title of "Fastest Women in NYP"?

Switching to the High Jump area, we saw SBM collecting 5 of the 6 medals available.. Kun of SBM added the ISG 08/09 Gold to his National Schools 2007 Silver.. While 100m finalist, Cheng Huan improved from a 07/08 Bronze to a 08/09 Silver.. In the Women final, we saw twin sisters Yi Hern and Yi Xuen winning Gold and Silver respectively with Justina Chan completing the SBM medal haul..
In the Discus finals, SBM grabbed both the Men and Women Golds while SHS took both silvers.. The Men final was a close fight between Akid (SBM) and Jing Hao (SHS) where Akid eventually won.. However the Women final was one sided affair as freshman Lay Chi smashed the school record with a whooping 42.84m (the previous record is 25.42m).. Jasmine Teo of SHS is in distant second..
The 200m Men final saw defending champion, Rahman cruised to an easy victory while Si Hao came in second and freshman Zheng Hao in third.. In the Women final we saw Jasmine defended her title dramatically.. The two favourites, Jia Rui and Jasmine, ran the curve and raced down the home stretch neck to neck.. With the Gold medal only 5 meters away, Jia Rui's fatigue legs finally gave in as she lost her balance and fell.. Once again like the previous ISG, we saw medics in action at the opening day..
In the middle distance action, we saw Marcus defended his 800m title easily with seven freshmen rounding up the top 8.. Freshman Hui Qin of SIT won the Women final convincingly..
Moving into Shot Put action, the Men final was once again the Akid-Jinghao show but it was Jinghao who won this time round.. The Women final was another recording breaking performance by Lay Chi.. She once again crushed the record and bring home her second Gold of the evening.. If she wins and breaks next week's Javelin record, she will be the very first person in NYP history to do it in their very first attempt..
The final women event of the evening, Women 3000m final saw Hui Qin breaking the school record by one full second.. By winning her second gold of the evening, Hui Qin is still in the race to win the Individual Champion title..
In the final event of the evening, we saw SBM finishing the day strongly, grabbing the top 4 positions in the 400m final..
At the last count, we see 6 titles being defended and 5 finals won by freshmen..
ISG Track and Field will return this friday, 5.30pm where the 5000m Men Final will be held..
